Nephrology Patient Education Handouts
This is the set of patient education handouts developed by Dr. Robert Gillespie, based on these principles:
  • Brief and concise – most are 1-2 pages; 4 pages maximum
  • Written specifically for pediatric patients
  • All original content; not copied from other sources
  • Noncommercial – free of advertising or product promotion
  • Easy to read – each one written at a 5th-6th grade reading level and formally analyzed for reading ease; emphasis on short sentences and small words
  • Visually appealing – Studies show many readers prefer a 14 point font and nonjustified right margin; liberal use of graphic elements such as tables, bullet points and illustrations
  • Optimized for printing – unlike many web pages which don’t print well, these are designed to fit on an 8.5x11” page
  • Interactive – many have spaces to write in patient-specific information, making the handouts more engaging and personalized
  • Consistent in format, style and appearance
  • Customizable – you can edit the text to meet your needs, and insert the name and phone number of your practice (replace the footer text   Compliments of Your Pediatric Nephrologist”)
  • Bilingual – every one translated into Spanish
  • Free

These are similar to the Nephrology handouts, but a little less sophisticated.  They do not have all the readability and low literacy level features, and are only in English.
